Invocation of the Spirit
This is the book in which Nancy sees the storm and lightning move in an illustration. This book is The Book of Ceremonial Magic, by Arthur Edward Waite, mentioned above. When Nancy is flipping through the book we see Plate VII: Instruments of Black Magic, from Chapter II: The Initial Rites and Ceremonies,
Section 2: A General Instruction concerning the Instruments required for the Art.
And the text around the animated illustration reads;
"...but a treatise on Magic of the period concerned, not appearing in the lifetime of its writer, is open to the gravest suspicion, because of the scandalous company to which it belongs. The second difficulty is internal, and it is just possible that it can be overriden. It is to a considerable extent a
rechauffé of various portions of the three undisputed books, and, ... no moment. The strength of the case against it lies mainly in the third difficulty, and even that is not quite conclusive. If not the work of Agrippa..."
The missing section being;
"even in the days of Agrippa, it is not likely that any author would have so liberally reproduced himself. The third difficulty is that it was rejected as a forgery by Wierus, the pupil of Agrippa, who must have had a good opportunity of knowing; its rejection by later writers simply follows the lead of Wierus, and is therefore of"
It is from Chapter III: Composite Rituals,
Section 5: The Fourth Book of Cornelius Agrippa.
The symbol on the cover of the book is an upside-down version of
Plate IX: The Goëtic Circle of Pacts, from Chapter IV: The Mysteries of Infernal Evocation according to the Grand Grimoire, Section 2: Concerning the Genuine Sanctum Regnum, or the True Method of Making Pacts.
The Craft
This is the book given to Sarah. It reads;
"Initiation
The Initiation Rite is performed at the Vernal & Autumnal Equinox as well as the Winter and Summer Solstice.
1 Tablespoonful Pipssissewa
2 Tablespoonful Rose Powder
1 Tablespoonful Violet Powder
1/2 Tablespoonful Vanillan Powder
1/8 Teaspoonful Saltpeter
Crush Pipssissewa fine as possible, add to rest of formula and mix thoroughly.
After sundown, during an hour of Venus, light a little of the incense mix. Light a Seven Power Candle. Read Psalm 61 aloud. Sit in quiet meditation for five minutes. Then, tell the Angels your heart's desire. Or, tell them what troubles you. It is said that if you repeat this Spell every seven days, the Angels will come to your aid. You must permit the Seven Power Candle to burn out. Do not extinguish it yourself.
Pleurisy Root
This, at its name suggests, is said to make a tea that is most helpful in the treatment of pleurisy.
We are also told that it is considered to be very useful in confusing an enemy. A little is thrown in front of the house and in back of the house, where the enemy lives."
Note: Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata) is misspelled in the text.
If the illustration on the facing page is from something else I cannot find it.
